Buying Guide
Size on watts, never on VA
Every listing leads with VA because it is the bigger number. But the number that counts is watts. In the 30 units we looked at, watts ran from 0.55 to 0.72 of VA. So a 2000VA unit could be anything from 1100W to 1440W. A basic office PC with a screen and router draws about 200-250W. A mid gaming rig draws 350-500W under load. Only a workstation or top gaming build needs more than 600W.
Your PC draws far less than its power supply rating
A 650W power supply is rated for its peak output, not what the PC uses. Sizing a UPS to the PSU sticker is the most common mistake. It buys you watts, not runtime, because the battery sets runtime. CyberPower's own figures show how fast runtime falls. Its 720W UT1200E is quoted at 65 minutes at 60W and 40 minutes at 90W. At 200W, it drops to just 14 minutes.
The AVR range is the number nobody advertises
AVR (automatic voltage regulation) fixes mains voltage without touching the battery. A wider input range means fewer trips to battery when the voltage sags. A lead-acid battery only lasts a set number of cycles, so a wide range also helps it last. Ranges here run from 140-300V at best to 220-240V at worst. Eight of the 30 units do not publish one. Treat a missing range as unknown, not safe.
Check the warranty split, not the headline term
The headline warranty covers the electronics. The battery, which is the part that fails, is often covered for less. Of the 30 listings we evaluated, 21 do not publish the battery term. Microtek and Intex give 2 years on the unit and 1 on the battery. Zebronics gives 1 year carry-in on everything. Artis publishes 2 years walk-in on both. Ask whether the battery can be replaced
A battery you can replace turns a dead UPS into a ₹1,000-1,500 swap. A sealed unit is scrap when its battery dies, often in two to four years. Yet 26 of the 30 listings we looked at never say either way. CyberPower says none of its three UT-series units let you swap the battery. The APC BR1500G-IN and BVX1600LI-IN do. For the rest, ask the seller before you buy.
Use the weight to check a capacity claim
Most of a UPS's weight is its batteries, so weight is a check on capacity that marketing cannot fake. One 12V 7Ah battery puts a unit at about 4-4.7 kg. Two 7Ah batteries land at 6-8 kg, and two 9Ah batteries at 10-11 kg. Four 9Ah batteries weigh about 17 kg. A high-capacity claim on a light chassis is not credible.
Keep it cool, because heat kills the battery
Nearly every desktop UPS uses a sealed lead-acid battery, the same chemistry as a car battery. It loses capacity with age, whether you use it or not. Heat roughly halves its life for every 10°C above about 25°C. So a UPS in a hot, closed corner fades faster than the same unit in a cool room. Give it space and airflow.
Read the recent reviews, not the star rating
Star ratings here sit in a narrow 3.3 to 4.2 band that tells you little. Written reviews tell a different story. Across the 30 units we evaluated, 20% to 77% of recent verified reviews were 1-2 star. The average was 50%. So a product at 44% is doing better than most, not failing. Look for specifics: backup collapsing within months, dead units on arrival, and how warranty claims went.
